THE "STAR CHILD'S" LEFT SIDE HEAD AND FACIAL PROFILE - ASSUMING HUMAN (UTE-AZTECAN / SHOSHONEAN TRIBAL) ORIGINS

Forensic reconstruction of the 300-900 year old "StarChild" relic had several inherent problems, primarily that most of the forward  facial structures were irretrievably missing except for one half of the upper jaw section known as the maxilla.   The right side half of this maxilla carried the perfect curve of "Star Child's" little nasal structure which allowed me to do measured assumptions for the width of his/her little nose through the process of "Mirroring."   Determining the sex of this child from the appearance of the skull alone was beyond impossible as the pathologies or mutations causing such profoundly symmetrical distortions and the fact that this oversized 1600 cc skull was in reality somewhere around five years old made sexing this child by observing it's skull impossible.  The cranial capacity for the average adult Homo sapiens sapiens is 1400 to 1425 cubic centimeters (cc).  Only advanced DNA testing would solve the mystery of it's sex.

Lloyd also stated his belief at that time that the "StarChild" could perhaps not be a child at all, but could perhaps be an "All-alien" person or human-alien hybrid as old as 25 to 45 years--See StarChild.com's latest updates--I CANNOT concurr.  I believe that the one-half of the upper maxilla I examined was indeed that belonging to a human child. At 10:15 PM PST on Monday night 22 November 1999, Lloyd Pye called to inform me that an arrangement allowing for complex DNA testing had been achieved and that complex testing as is done in ancient relics exposed to very acidic soil for hundreds of years had been undertaken during the month.   Very complex tests are being performed by a reputable institution that wishes to remain anonymous until the testing is complete.

On the week of 09 December 1999, preliminary DNA testing was completed. Lloyd Pye reported in with the latest results from the grinding up of one of the two little teeth recovered with the upper maxilla of the "StarChild." "IT'S A BOY!'" With an X-Y Chromosomal configuration observed at the Amelogenin locus. While much of the actual DNA in the samples had been  leached away by the high acidity of the soil and and therefore rendered chemically useless for testing, there was enough of a sample to conclude that the "StarChild" relic was a male child and was also completely human (Homo sapiens sapiens). The soil acidity within the mine shaft or natural cave where the "StarChild's" skull was completely buried, interfered with virtually all the tests from four separate locations within the skull and one sample taken from the maxilla.  They were unable even to match the separated maxilla portion to the rest of the skull.  There was not enough DNA recovered in the samples to test for paternity, as in species of origin, though NO anomalous DNA (Not of the human species) was observed at any time.

Another problem with the four samples taken from the "StarChild" skull was the unusual amount of cross contamination with the DNA of at least two, possibly three other persons despite the intense sanding and scrubbing each sample received prior to be ground up.  No matter how hard they tried, at least one of the samples was contaminated to the point where it was useless.

Lloyd Pye continues to note that which we all observed:

"We all noticed the 'Starchild' skull's extraordinary porosity (a sponge-like quality), cross sectionally within the actual plates of bone, relative to normal human bone. This might have been expected since the Starchild skull is remarkably light compared to the adult skull, which is close to its size.   The adult skull was from a person who stood approximately five feet high.   'StarChild' was large, especially in the head for a five to six year old.  The interior spar architecture visually resembled bone cross sections more like species of song birds than heavy primate mammals. No explanation in nature exists for this observation as far as we have been able to research in the literature of osteopathology (Bone medicine) in humans."

Mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) samples were taken from the baby teeth and the embedded adult teeth in the maxilla fragment.  Enough nucleal DNA and mtDNA may be present in these teeth, that a full genetic study could be undertaken to figure out whether or not this is a pathology as in a genetic disease or an evolutionary mutation. All further DNA and mtDNA testing is ON HOLD at this time pending the solicitation and acquisition of newly donated funds to undertake the collection of tooth pulp samples from one of several embedded teeth in the half maxilla (Upper jaw fragment).  Future mtDNA and regular DNA testing will be able to tell us what we can only assume at this point:  That the adult (Now genetically proven a female) skull is the mother of the "Star Child" relic.  And further, to confirm that whoever fathered this boy is completely human as in Homo sapiens sapiens.

As a professional private detective I am compelled to state that it is professionally proper in all cases to have started off with the assumption that the "StarChild" was fully human.  Also it is professionally responsible to communicate that the odds always were that the skull would be proven not only to be completely human, but that aside from the remote possibility of it being a human of an emerging new (Low gravity?) species, it would also most likely prove to be a Homo sapiens sapiens child with a hitherto uncatalogued pathology which should rightly be listed in all international medical pathology books as "Pye's Syndrome."  Any new genetic disease pathology discovered due to the efforts of this research author should be named after Lloyd Pye.

It should also be noted that while the normal-looking adult skull appears to be within the parameters as established for average female skulls, there is a fifteen percent possibility that it could also have been the skull of a small effeminent man.   Some masculine traits (See below) were observed.  In which case an "X" and a "Y" chromosome would be observed in testing from the interior tooth materials collected for a chromosome test.   As of the 15th of November 1999, my opinion and that of many other lettered forensic anthropologists and pathologists was vindicated.  Lloyd Pye stated the normal skull's tested genome proved it was conclusively female despite the elongated tooth root and other male-like traits within the skull.  Lloyd could not say if a chromosome test had been performed, or if it was the more complex genome evaluation.  She proved to have the XX (The double "X" chromosome pairing) configuration observed in ALL human females).  She was a woman who lived perhaps as far back as 900 years ago in northern Mexico.

PLEASE NOTE:    The profound degree of the birth defects or mutations of the cranium's basic configuration can be seen from these two side drawings.  The temporal regions of the skull angle forward instead of out to the side as in a normal human skull.  The zygomatic process bones (Side cheek extensions) that the hinge of the lower jaw fits under angles downward at an incredibly odd angle.   The whole lower face appears to slant inward with the forehead extending well beyond the tip of the nose or any other portion of the face.  The eyes protrude because they fit inside their more shallow recesses that way, and the slant of the optic nerves is at a different angle than in a normal skull.  The lower bump of bone that anchors strong neck muscles, the inion, is almost flush with the rest of the skull and the neck attachment points clearly show a much smaller neck in proportion to head size than is normal in any human child. This degree of reduced area is profound enough to warrant consideration of a potential new species--Perhaps one from a low gravity environment--Though this is purely speculation only.

Before the DNA test results came back, "Hominoid" researcher and author Lloyd Pye had from the beginning proposed that this skull was proof of the old Aztec, Hopi, and the Mexican Shoshonean star being visitation legends and myths.  If by some odd chance, the DNA had proven to be something other than Homo sapiens sapiens, I had speculated a possible human/alien hybrid version by applying the old "Star Beings" descriptions (What few we could pry out of Hopi, Pala, and Ajachema (Juaninio) tribal elders in conversation) in order to achieve a "Hybrid" version more in keeping with Lloyd's hopes.   That version is still posted above, along side the Aztec/Shoshonean
child version that illustrates him as a little boy living in Aztec times.

Alas, it was not to be...

UPDATE-->  11 JUNE 2003:   Lloyd Pye announced on Coast to Coast AM with George Noory that a British group had financed a new round of mtDNA tests.  The preliminary mtDNA results showed that the StarChild's "Mom" was HAPLO Meso-American "GROUP- A" while the StarChild skull itself tested as HAPLO Meso-American "GROUP C."   This suggests that the female normal skull was NOT related to the StarChild skull by birth lineage.  Lloyd suggested the possibility that she might have been an attendant, a caregiver, a medicinal initiate, or even "A lover."  Lloyd still supports the notion that the StarChild is a human-alien hybrid and that Homo sapiens sapiens are not originally evolved naturally from Earth hominoid apes and robust hominids.   He believes that mankind's origins came from off-world.  Lloyd also made it clear that he supports the reconstructions that show that the StarChild was a young or fully adult specimen who lived to age thirty or forty based upon the complex development of the sutures in the skull connecting the parietal and the occipital analog skull plates.

FORENSIC ILLUSTRATION OF MOTHER.

Mother's skull

This native meso-American woman is now proven by genetic testing to be a female and may now be assumed to be from a remote Indian tribe 100 miles south of Chihuahua, Mexico.  Reconstructing her face was difficult as no cranial-facial tissue thickness tables exist for native American peoples older than the turn of the century.  Very few photo archives exist for Indians of the Shoshonean bloodlines in Mexico prior to 1900.  Modern native Meso-Americans have a slightly altered appearance because of the modern diets and exercise habits.  Because her skull is estimated to be between 300 and 900 years old, I had to assume healthy flesh over muscle with 4% fat or less for her facial reconstruction.   The rear of her skull showed the flattened cultural deformation known as "Cradleboarding" and the transverse palate and the malar bones suturing showed me that with a high degree of certainty that she was a true Indian with no white lineage, whatsoever.

Lloyd announced on 09 December 1999 that Carbon 14 dating had been performed on the adult skull in which the results were calculated placing the age of the purported "Mom's" skull at 900 years.

Lloyd Pye contacted us with the results of the 02 November 1999 testing on the normal appearing adult skull.  He quoted from the report:

"Human genomic DNA was extracted and typed from the adult's skull using a screening test called AmpFISTR-Blue (3 genetic loci) plus Amelogenin (gender determination). Results reveal that the DNA extracted from the adult skull (occipital condyle) is from a female person. A genetic profile at three forensically significant loci has been obtained." It was clear that the female normal skull had not been exposed to the same acidity of the soil that the "StarChild" skull had been buried in.  A full DNA profile was achieved with her:

"The Amelogenin test, which indicates male or female, clearly showed female. Then a screening test of only three genetic areas--the 3 loci (DNA sites)--was able to detect all of the DNA required to provide a genetic profile of the female. This ease of extraction can be attributed to the fact the human skull was not buried in the soil of the mine tunnel (or cave) it was found in. It lay supine (face up) on the surface, meaning the condyle bone that was tested (a knob-shape alongsidethe neck hole opening) would not have been touching the ground."

Her lower jaw (Mandible) was irretrievably lost and so I had to make measured proportional assumptions.  Many points of her skull measured to within more masculine parameters in milimeters such as the length of her tooth roots and mastoid bones being straitened--More like a human male--Than the more curved ones as is more common in most females.  Also her cheek bones are unusually wide in comparison to most races of human females, again like a man's, except that in Native Siberians and in their descendants, nearly all Native North, Central and South Americans, the cheek bones of the women are also considerably wide when compared to the women of most other races.

Bill And Llyod

The only significant testing left to be done on the mother is completion of the mtDNA testing to prove if she is biologically related to the "StarChild" relic.  We know she is fully human.  If her mtDNA tests within the parameters expected, we'll know she was his mother.  Or if she was not.

THE STAR CHILD PROJECT

FORENSIC ARTIST WILLIAM L. MCDONALD 1999Bill and Llyod

In early February, 1999, Hominoid researcher and noted book author Lloyd Pye announced his acquisition of two skulls of Mexican native origin to the general public.  He emphasized the dramatic and profound conditions to the skull of the five-year-old child.  Many UFO community internet news organizations carried the story and the location of the web site devoted to maintaining the most current information on the skulls:  www.Starchildproject.com .  This site is administrated by Lloyd's partner, Mark Bean.  On Wednesday, 28 April 1999, Lloyd flew into San Diego and brought the skulls to my home in Monarch Beach (Dana Point), CA.  For three days, All Lori and I focussed on was the two skulls.   First "Mom," then the "Star Child."  For all current information on the status of the mtDNA, Nucleal DNA, and Carbon Dating tests and all current analysis and hypotheses pertaining to both skulls, click onto the Star Child Project web site.  Assisting Lloyd in financing the art reconstructions was a private research corporation from San Diego, CA, the TRUTH SEEKER CO., INC.

My job as a forensic artist was NOT to determine the origins of the skulls or even the species.

After January 2000, Lloyd intends to step back a little from his custodial duties with the "StarChild" relics.  Mark Bean in Las Vegas and the San Diego "Truth Seeker Foundation" will step forward to carry on the research into the skull's pathology.   "Hominoids," crop circle, and anthropological researcher Chad Deetken of Vancouver, British Columbia will step in along with a consulting cranial-facial plastic surgeon who wishes to remain anonymous.  Chad's E-mail is at:       chad@direct.ca.  I will remain available for further work if asked.

Donations to pay off the mounting debt caused by all the tests and for further DNA & mtDNA testing of the pulp in the maxilla's embedded teeth can be mailed to The Truth Seeker Foundation at P.O.Box 28550, San Diego, CA., 92198.  Any written queries to Mark, Lloyd, Chad, or the anonymous surgeon should be mailed to that address.

I was not paid to verify the stories of the family who actually owns them, nor was it to try to verify the original story of the girl who claimed to have found them over 70 years ago.   All other parts of the skulls and all the other bones had been stated to have been washed away in an overnight flood brought on by the seasonal monsoon rains.  They must be presumed to be lost, forever. My job was simply to reconstruct as best I could, what these two individuals looked like when they were alive and kicking.  I do not and cannot confirm the origins of the relics, or the more specific medical findings and opinions that have been relayed to me beyond the information Lloyd gave to me in detail that is also on the Starchild Project web site. I can confirm that I repeatedly handled both skulls, and that I observed that both skulls were real bone and not in any way artificial, manufactured or faked.  They were NOT a special effect or a mold.  They were real calcified bone with an a long time coating of varnish, and had been exposed to a soil or an acidic substance with a heavy iron content, as there were several strange discolorations to the child's lower cranial structures.

The story was that the adult female had died above the soil after burying the child.  The child's skeleton was described by third parties, 70 years ago, as "Very disfigured with a disproportionately large head."  In physically handling the skull of the "Star Child," I had to wonder at how light weight and bird-like the bone thickness of the cranial sections were on the skull.   And yet how sturdy and healthy it appeared, especially around the sutures which denotes overall good health.  And this is all I know. . .

Thursday, 26 August 1999 Supplemental: My Wife, Lori Marie McDonald, and our colleague, well known author Whitley Strieber, both experienced an odd, migraine-like headache after handling the two skulls under Lloyd's supervision.  Whitley stated that he had to search for aspirin or headache medication after his being allowed to examine the skulls and his wife Ann Strieber also confirmed Whitley's illness and their search for pain medication.  Whitley related this story on Sunday night, 15 August 1999, both on the air and later, a half hour after the end of our second broadcast together on Art Bell's "Dreamland."  Neither skull had any bad smell or any necrotized materials or any pathogenic bacteria left inside or on them after so many years plus they were both coated with a very old layer of varnish.   I myself felt something euphoric and an intense satisfaction with my work with the skulls and no pain or discomfort of any kind whatsoever. Lori became so ill that as Lloyd was heading out to the airport on Saturday, 01 May 1999, she took to her bed with the worst migraine headache ever experienced in her entire life.  Lori's pain was so entirely consuming that she was actually talking in that pain state between sleep and wakefulness that only migraine sufferers can explain.

Under these conditions and in a pain induced altered state of awareness, Lori informed me that our little male "StarChild's" diet may have been good but that his mother had to premasticate or chew his meat, corn, and other tough and fibrous foods.  Lori then insisted that the child had chronic bronchitis and/or other chronic breathing problems and infections.   Further, Lori insisted that this child needed a pliant and flexible--Yet sturdy neck brace of woven materials similar to a cervical collar made out of something like sage or chaparral materials and interior lined with something soft like rabbit fur--This was to prevent the child from suffocating himself (Closing off his airway) or injuring his extremely delicate neck during play time or outside activities (The delicate and reduced neck muscle attachment points surrounding the bottom portion of the skull and the hole where the medulla oblongata (Neural Cortex) exits to become the spinal chord certainly does not conflict with such a hypothesis).

Lori always refered to the relic as that of a little boy.  She always knew that it would be proven to be a male child.

Lastly and most importantly, Lori was insistent that the side jaw profile was inaccurately reconstructed, pushing me with extreme emotional urgency to remeasure the distances from where the forward portion of the maxilla was assumed to be to the rear attachment point of the missing left Zygomatic Process (Side strip portion of the cheek bone) and to compare the measurements to the lower jaw size and length of other five and six-year-olds.  As Lori has NO knowledge or experience in that area, I found this urgent revelation of hers remarkably disturbing as was her sudden and unexplained illness.  In reexamining my skull photos and lower skull side profile proportions and the extreme rear positioning of the ear canals toward the rear base of the skull, I determined that I had indeed erred and consequently, I did an entire new drawing to supercede the one I'd given Lloyd Pye.   To this day, Lori being in such pain and discovering a major error of forensic perception of the lower side cranial proportions and relative positions where a lower jaw would fit into is something that I can neither explain nor understand.  Ultimately her illness resulted in me making a drastic correction with a profound alteration to my forensic composites of the "StarChild."  Lori had been right all along.

Special thanks for his photography services go to my fellow Dana Point artist and photographer  friend and colleague Cliff Wassmann.  Cliff is a painter and photographer of ancient sacred sites and ocean themes from around the globe.  He is a regular exhibiting artist at the Summer "Art-A-Fair Festival" in Laguna Beach, CA.  He provided full slide and print photo services to both Lloyd Pye and I during the three days it took me to complete the reconstruction work.  Cliff can be found at:
